MANILA, Philippines -- Former president Joseph Estrada has been found guilty beyond reasonable doubt of plunder by the Sandiganbayan and has been sentenced to life imprisonment.At the same time, the anti-graft court ordered the freezing of Estrada’s accounts estimated at $87 million.

The funds, including protection money from illegal gambling operators, embezzled tobacco taxes, and commissions from insider trading, will be "forfeited," the anti-graft court ruled.

But Estrada son, Senator Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada, and lawyer Eduardo Serapio, were acquitted by the anti-graft court in its ruling issued Wednesday that capped a six-year trial for the former leader who was ousted in a popular revolt in 2001.The perjury case against Estrada however was dismissed.The court said it would allow Estrada to stay at his resthouse in Tanay, Rizal “until further orders.”The former leader said he did not want any special treatment.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed an Executive Order yesterday morning designating seven geothermal-producing provinces, including Negros Occidental and Oriental, as special economic zones in a move to attract investors, accelerate the development of the country's geothermal resources and bring down power costs.

Negros Occidental Acting Gov. Isidro Zayco welcomed the move that he said will boost employment and the economy of Negros Island. "We are so happy the President included Negros Occidental," he said.

The announcement of the President is good news for Negros Occidental because it will compliment the economic zone being built in Sagay City, Zayco said.

Three students from Bacolod City schools are among the topnotchers in the June 2007 nurse licensure examination, the results of which were announced by the Professional Regulation Commission yesterday.

In eighth place were Ma. Azucena Lacson Abella of West Negros College and Raymund John Yelo Ang of the University of Saint La Salle with passing rates of 86.20 percent. In 10th place was Mary Anne Real Reynes of Riverside College with 85.80 percent.

A total of 31,275 (or 48 percent) of the 64,909 first-timers, repeaters, and voluntary retakers of all the subjects, passed the June 2007 nursing licensure exam, the PRC announced. The PRC said 248 (or 73.8 percent) out of 336 retakers of the examination based on a decision of the Court of Appeals, also passed. read more >>
